Kasperky Lab Spam Report: May 2010

According to Kaspersky Lab’s spam report for May 2010, the USA maintained its positions as the prime distributor of spam, despite a decrease of 2.4% compared to March’s figure: the quantity of spam originating from this country increased by 8.5%, having returned to its usual level of 20.7%. Second and third places respectively went to India with 7.5% and Russia with 5.4%.

May saw major shifts involving China (3.6%) and Brazil (3.7%) – these countries have started to slowly win back their positions. They are not in the Top 5 yet, but could be soon. The 4th and the 5th places in the Top 5 are occupied by Vietnam and the Republic of Korea with 4.8% and 4.1% respectively. Noticeable changes happened to spam flows coming from Germany and Italy, they dropped out of the Top 10 having distributed 2% less spam each compared with the previous month. Interestingly, there is a “newcomer” in May’s Top 20 – Argentina distributed 2.1% of the total volume of spam.

Kaspersky Lab’s Antivirus Products Receive a VB100 Award for Protection of the Windows 2008 R2 Server Platform

Kaspersky Lab announces that Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 and 8.0 for Windows Servers has received a VB100 award after successful testing on the Microsoft Windows 2008 Server R2 platform.

The test was carried out by the respected British publication Virus Bulletin. In all, thirty three antivirus solutions were tested, including solutions from many of the leading vendors. The solutions ran on computers under the management of a 64-bit server running Microsoft Windows 2008 Server R2.

During the tests, the security products had to detect and neutralise both known and unknown malware from a number of different collections, including: - viruses and worms from WildList.org, and worms, bots, Trojans and other polymorphous software from similar sources. The updated collections included some of the latest malware, e.g. WildList.org had new versions of the Koobface worm.

Kaspersky Lab and M86 Security Extend Their Global Partnership

Data Protection is common sense

With the holiday season finally here and numerous events and activities going on, the summer is a time of multiple distractions and this is particularly evident with this year’s World Cup. It is very easy to give less consideration to more the mundane but crucial business matters. Without giving too many football puns, it would be very easy to take your eye off the ball with regards to essential, but less visible concerns, such as the perennial consideration of data protection. However the penalties, be they legal, reputational or relational can be far reaching and potentially ruinous, particularly with the UK and worldwide economy looking to get back on its feet against significant odds.

The Data Protection Act 1998 sets out robust legislation with regards to the security of private sensitive data and gives a wide scope for penalties when organisations fail to meet the criteria. Whilst data protection is especially relevant for professional organisations and businesses, such as law firms or medical establishments, the onus is on all businesses to take appropriate steps and continually monitor the levels of security to maintain Quality Assurance integrity.

Children and the Internet, Safety Rules: Kaspersky Lab focuses on safe surfing for families

Today’s Internet provides huge opportunities for children to learn more about the world in which they live, to communicate more widely and to study and have fun, but the Internet can also have a dark side. Children are often far too trusting of their virtual friends and this may lead to them unwittingly revealing personal information, or meeting someone in real life whose motives are less than pure. Some criminals will even take advantage of children’s naivety to extort money or download malware to the family computer.

However, children are not just victims on the Internet – some take part in illegal activities such as hacking.

Parents have to share some of the blame when this happens. “When their children start to get the hang of what they are doing, many parents consider that their mission is fulfilled,” Maria Namestnikova, Senior Spam Analyst at Kaspersky Lab, explains in her article ‘Children and the Internet’. “But that is when the parents’ work actually begins.”

The author suggests that one of the most effective method for parents to keep their children safe when online is to surf the Internet together, explaining what is safe and what is potentially dangerous as they go along. This approach, in combination with software solutions that include parental control functionality, offers the most all-round protection for any child. Surfing together may resolve a number of other problems of a family nature, as well as addressing issues of IT security. Anyone who cares about their child’s online safety ought to help them get to grips with this exciting new environment.

Internetization as a New Mobile Malware Trend

As part of Kaspersky Lab’s recent Security Analyst Summit, its Mobile Research Group Manager, Denis Maslennikov, gave a presentation titled ‘Mobile malware and the Internet: a myth or reality?’ In the presentation, Denis talked about the latest mobile malware trends, focusing on how the Internet is being used to spread malware, infect users’ phones and as a means for the cybercriminals to issue commands to their botnets.

The first piece of mobile malware to make use of the Internet was written by a Ukrainian hacker back in 2004. Cybercriminals then lost interest in these types of programs until quite recently, when from June 2009 to June 2010, 35% of all detected smartphone malware operated via the Internet.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 Receives Top Marks from AV-Comparatives

Kaspersky Lab announces that the AV-Comparatives laboratory has awarded Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 the highest mark possible in tests designed to analyse the product’s proactive defense capabilities.

Experts from the authoritative Austrian test lab analysed the performance of twenty of the most popular computer security products from leading vendors. The test focused on the quality of proactive defense provided by each product during on-demand scans.

All of the solutions were tested using out-of-date signature databases and made active use of static heuristics and extended signatures relating to malware families. The security products were pitted against a set of over 27,000 brand new malware samples that had been detected after the antivirus databases were last updated. This test was designed to assess each solution’s ability to defend a user’s PC from new threats for which individual signatures have not yet been released.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 is Named ‘Product of the Year’ by the Respected German IT publication PC Magazin

Kaspersky Lab announces that Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 was named ‘Product of the Year 2009/2010’ by readers of the German computer journal PC Magazin.
